Derek Samuel Moore was born on January 28, 1983 to parents Aaron, a theater actor, and Danica, a plastic artist. The younger of two, the boy always displayed enough charisma and charm to keep his slight indiscretions from causing trouble. Although not misbehaved, it took a long time for Derek to come into his own and decide what he wanted to do in life. This meant that, as a child, although he was sociable and likable, he didn't have much ambition to guide him.
A bright, but average student, he excelled in the social aspects of high school, not putting much stock in his academics. Classes were cut in favor of sneaking out of school and just hanging out with friends or taking a ride around town. His parents, who were always lenient towards their children's discipline, accepted it as a phase and merely ignored the calls from school.
Derek almost didn't graduate from high school, not only because of absences, but because he lacked the motivation to care about anything being said in the classroom. He found the classes to be dull and out of touch with reality, but after his mother sat him down and gave him a very, very stern talking to with tears in her eyes - the first he could remember - he buckled down and paid his dues to get the diploma.
It didn't take long for Derek to realize that the diploma in his hands meant jackshit, since he had no idea what he wanted to do with his life. Although he'd never had trouble getting by in classes, as far as the subject matter went, he knew that four more years of school was the last thing he wanted to do at that point in his life and really, his parents could afford to spend the money on other things.
Instead of applying for colleges, he did what any lost, white, middle class male would do and took the car his parents bought him out on a road trip across the country. He was gone for nine months, working odd jobs to make money and enjoying the nomad lifestyle more than he would admit, before his parents laid down the law and demanded he went back home. Although he wasn't completely financially dependent on his parents by age 19, he also wasn't completely independent, so after a lot of insistence, he went back to Providence to figure out what to do with the rest of his life.
Still with no clue on what to pursue, Derek applied at a number of jobs his mother circled in the paper and the only one who replied to him was the local radio station, who were looking for fact-checkers for the morning news show. It was a crappy job and boring, but it was something, so Derek took it.
He was surprised to learn that he actually did enjoy working at the station, though the position would need to be reviewed. After almost two years of fact-checking, he was able to convince one of the bosses to let him do a voice test. He did well and started filling in for other DJs when they had to call in sick.
It took another year before a position opened up and Derek was allowed to co-host one of the network's shows. The hours were shitty, but he loved being on air. He hosted late night shows for another year, before his application for hosting the morning entertainment show was looked at. From then on, he started to really enjoy his job and enthusiastically submit new formats and features for the program.
It was at one of the many celebrity interviews that he met his now girlfriend, Chloë Porter. Chloë was a singer who was having her 15 minutes of fame thanks to dating a wildly successful musician - or really, bearding for him. At first, Derek didn't think much of her, but she was friendly enough and they kept in and out of touch for a few months following. It wasn't until months later, after her sudden fame had died down, that they randomly ran into each other at 2010's San Diego Comic Con and hit it off. As they say, the rest is history.
Derek and Chloë's relationship is far from perfect and they had a rather rocky start. Chloë was just going into rehab due to alcohol abuse and other issues when they met at the Comic Con and it took almost a year for things to settle down. They were broken up for five months after dating for about nine and have been back together since July, 2011. They have just moved into a new house in Providence, RI and Derek believes he has found "The One".
He currently hosts a radio show with Natasha Vanderplast and works occasionally as a model for local brands and businesses. Derek is still very close to his parents, who live only a few blocks away from him and Chloë, but he has very little - if any - contact with his older sister, who is a dentist in town. They have never gotten along and it is one of his biggest regrets that they can't be friends.
Personality-wise, Derek is a guy's guy at heart and he tries to be as laid back as possible. He tries to be a decent person, but recently he has uncovered some anger issues he is not sure how to handle. These issues mostly involve being jealous of other guys who look at his girl, but also feeling helpless as far as protecting Chloë goes. She drives him crazy with her tendency to act first and think later, but since he can't get angry at her, he just gets angry at everyone else. It's slowly becoming an issue to everyone around them and it's something Derek frets having to deal with in the near future.
He and Chloë are the proud owners of three dogs and two cats. His girlfriend would argue that they are nine cats, but his parents actually look after the other ones and Derek takes no responsibility for them. They are always looking for people to pet sit when they go out, because these beasts are a true handful.
He has a four-year-old goddaughter named Madie, whom he adores. He is close with her mother and tends to fill the parental role left by Maddie's dad, who wants nothing to do with the girls. He desperately wants children of his own, but so far he and Chloë have not found it prudent to make a baby. He has plans to propose and start a family in the upcoming year, but who knows what is in store for them.
